다. 시에서는 이런 젊은이들이 처참하게 죽어가는 상황을 parapets와 trenches 등의 단어를 쓰면서 신랄하게 풍자하고 있다
시는 1행에서 14행 까지는 성경과 같은 내용을 전개하고 있고 마지막 2행에서 반전을 준다.그렇게 읽는다면 이 시의 지은이가 진정으로 전달하고자 하는 바를 잘 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
이 시는 구약성서의 Abraham과 Isaac의 이야기를 parody 한 것 이다. 그들에게는 젊은이들의 희생은 사소하게 보였을 것이고 자신들의 욕심을 채우기 위한 하나의 수단에 지나지 않았을 것이다. 당시의 지도자들은 젊은이들을 전쟁터로 내몰기 위해 전쟁을 정당화하고 미화시켰을 것이다.
